The Pogo Collection includes correspondence with newspaper editors, publisher Simon and Schuster, and the Hall Syndicate, which syndicated the strip; correspondence relating to the National Cartoonists Society and with other cartoonists; extensive files of fan correspondence, requests to reprint artwork, requests from charities for special drawings, correspondence related to military insignia designed by Kelly,and proposals to commercialize characters; articles authored by Kelly, manuscripts from his many books, some promotional materials, photographs of Kelly taken for publicity purposes, and photographs of Kelly with well known persons; newspaper and periodical articles about Kelly and his extensive public appearances; and Kelly's business and personal financial records. The National Cartoonists Society grew out of the so-called "chalk talks" that a number of cartoonists did for the troops during World War II. The Society was officially formed in March of 1946 with Rube Goldberg as its first president. Within two weeks, the society had 32 members.
